Summer Undergraduate Fellowship || Rockefeller University

The Rockefeller University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to conduct laboratory research. SURF students work with leading scientists in a broad range of areas including biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry; molecular, cell and developmental biology; immunology; virology and microbiology; neuroscience; physics; and mathematical biology.

In order to fully experience the world of scientific research, SURF students are required to present and discuss scientific publications at weekly Journal Club meetings. This exposure allows participants to familiarize themselves with speaking to a scientific audience. SURF students also attend a special lecture series where Rockefeller faculty discuss their research and the evolution of their scientific interests. At the end of the program, SURF students will present their research results to fellow students and mentors at a poster session.

Open to: US College students in their 2nd or 3rd years.

Deadline: Feb 1, 2020

Payment: Housing, $6000 over 10 weeks

Location: New York, USA

Columbia University Dept. Biological Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship/Amgen Scholarship || Columbia, USA

Columbia/Barnard students interested in the SURF and Amgen Scholars Program can begin applying on January 3rd of the year in which they wish to conduct research. By applying to the SURF program, you will also be considered for the Amgen program.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University offers Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships to a select group of motivated undergraduate students who will benefit from the opportunity for hands-on biology related laboratory research. This is a chance to experience the joys of discovering something completely new while learning to overcome the challenges inherent in scientific research. Most students work either on the Morningside Heights campus or in the biomedical labs at Columbia's Health Sciences Center (the free shuttle bus gets you there in fifteen minutes).

The fellowship is competitive with awards based on grades, recommendations, and a personal meeting with the laboratory director. You may apply if you are currently a junior, sophomore, or first-year student in Columbia College, Barnard College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, or the School of General Studies. No previous research experience is necessary, and you do not need to be a biology major to apply. Students are expected to work full-time for the duration of the program, so participation in SURF is not compatible with attending summer school, working at another job, or volunteering.

The SURF program runs for 10 weeks, from May 26th through July 31st, 2020. During the 10 weeks of the program, the students work full-time (about 40 hours/week) on independent study projects under the guidance of a research scientist. At the beginning of the program the students also have an orientation program which includes laboratory safety and selected topics on biological research. In addition, once a week SURF students get together to hear a scientist present a research seminar or to describe their own research to the other SURF students. All students are required to present orally, write an original research article describing their research due in August and present a poster of their work at the annual SURF Symposium during the spring semester. Participants receive a stipend of $5000.

Open to: Any U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident attending a degree-granting institution as an undergraduate in their 2nd or 3rd years.

Deadline: Saturday, Feb 1, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. CST

Payment: Yes, $5000 stipend over 10 weeks

Location: Columbia, USA

Summer Internship Program In Biomedical Research || National Institutes of Health (US)

Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research (At the NIH "biomedical research" includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics). The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1150 laboratories/research groups located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD, and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; Phoenix, AZ; and Detroit, MI.  NOTE: the number of positions in Hamilton, Framingham, Phoenix, and Detroit is limited.

Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes/Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a wide range of summer activities including an orientation to help interns get off to a good start, lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.

Open to: US citizens or Permanent Residents who have matriculated into an accredited community college, college, university, or graduate program in a clinical discipline

Deadline: March 1st, 2020

Payment: Yes, dependent on education level, over minimum 8 week program

Location: Various NIH locations in USA

Summer Placements || Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK

An undergraduate summer placement is an ideal opportunity for students who are studying for their first degree (including medical and veterinary students) to gain research/work experience, usually during the summer recess.

Placements are usually available across the full spectrum of the Institute's activities and are offered for three months between June and September.

Summer Lab Science Program || Mayo Clinic

The Summer Lab Science Program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, offers students the opportunity to gain experience in the clinical laboratory environment by working alongside Mayo Clinic laboratory employees.

Working with blood, tissue and bodily fluid specimens, technologists perform a wide range of tests from the simple to the complex, using both time-honored manual techniques and state-of-the-art instruments. A patient's diagnosis, treatment and health may be directly dependent upon the laboratory test results.

As clinical testing is highly regulated by Mayo's accrediting agencies and requires appropriate levels of educational degrees, you will not be responsible for performing clinical testing — though you'll have the opportunity to perform pre-analytical functions, work on laboratory-related projects and potentially observe high-complexity testing.

While in the Summer Lab Science Program, your responsibilities may include aliquoting, extraction, centrifugation, assay and instrument validation, and instrument preparation and loading.

Open to: U.S. citizens (or those authorized to work in the U.S.) who are completing junior year (summer prior to graduation) with a cumulative GPA >2.75.

Payment: TBA with the position’s posting

Location: Rochester, MN (U.S.)

Mayo Clinic Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), sponsored by Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, offers a great way to build your skills as a young scientist or test your inclinations toward research.

Our SURF fellows tell us about the lasting friendships they made during the program and how the experience helped them with their career decision-making process. And because the questions they are studying are at the forefront of modern science, many students earn acknowledgment or co-authorship in articles submitted to professional publications.

In addition to their lab work, they also describe some of their unique experiences:

  • Mentors. The daily experience of learning from Mayo Clinic faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students and others who are farther along their career paths.

  • Real-world research. The excitement of gaining hands-on experience with real-world research projects at a major medical center.

  • Top-notch scientists. The opportunities they had for close collaboration with nationally and internationally recognized scientists.

  • Modern facilities. The chance to learn how to use world-class instrumentation in modern research facilities.

  • Community. Great times living, working and playing with the whole SURF community.

We work hard to bring together a wide variety of talented, motivated students from all ethnic, geographic, educational and economic groups.

Open to: Any student at a U.S. college completing their 2nd or 3rd year with a GPA >3.0.

Payment: $6000 stipend (over 10 weeks)

Location: Pheonix/Scottsdale, AZ (U.S.) OR Rochester, MN (U.S.) OR Jacksonville, Florida (U.S.)
