NIEHS Undergraduate Summer Training in Environmental Toxicology

The Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology

The Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology is an opportunity for students to participate in on-going research at the Harvard Forest. Harvard Forest research focuses on the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems, including global warming, hurricanes, forest harvesting, and invasive organisms. Researchers come from many disciplines, and specific projects center on population and community ecology, paleoecology, land-use history, aquatic ecology, biochemistry, soil science, ecophysiology, and atmosphere-biosphere exchanges.

The core of our funding is for undergraduate students who are enrolled in a 2 or 4 year colleges. Students who have completed their associates degree (2 year program) and are going on to get a bachelor's degree (4 year program) are also encouraged to apply and will be considered as part of the general applicant pool.

Organization for Tropical Studies NAPIRE Summer Program

The NAPIRE Program is designed to introduce Native American and Pacific Islander undergraduate students to the biodiversity of the tropics. As part of the program, students will complete a field project, including experimental design, data gathering, and analysis and presentation of results, in collaboration with fellow students and a research mentor. Students will experience the process of applying the scientific method to ecological inquiry and discovery in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.

The NAPIRE Program is open to biology students with a demonstrated interest in field ecology. Native American and Pacific Islander students are strongly encouraged to apply. As part of the application process, students designate the OTS program mentors with whom they wish to work. Student research interests should correspond closely to those of the preferred mentor, as all field projects will be designed in agreement with the mentors research interests and expertise.

 

Noble Summer Research Scholar Program

Working side-by-side with a mentor scientist and laboratory members from the Noble Foundation's Plant Biology Division or Forage Improvement Division, Noble Scholars perform a research project specifically tailored to their interests and educational background. Scholars quickly become part of the Noble Foundation research environment. Noble Scholars are involved in all laboratory activities, while conducting experiments to further their own research project. At the conclusion of the program, Noble Scholars present their findings to the Noble Foundation scientific community.

Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction Summer Internship Program

CMOP interns engage in leading-edge research to understand and predict biological, chemical and physical processes of the river-to-ocean ecosystem, contributing data and analysis that provide guidance for sustainable ecosystem management. Interns work closely with senior scientists, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students on interdisciplinary projects ranging from physical and biogeochemical oceanography, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, marine genomics, ocean engineering, and computer science. The University of Utah - USURP

These programs provide opportunities to gain research experience in a variety of biological fields, including biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, ecology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and neurobiology. 
Participating students will be matched, according to their interests, with faculty sponsors. Students will spend ten weeks working in a state-of-the-art research laboratory, as part of their sponsor’s research team. The research experience will be supplemented by an informal seminar series in which students will learn about the research interests and career paths of current students and faculty. To help students understand their research projects more deeply, they will each give verbal presentations and write a short proposal about their individual projects and present a poster at the end of the Program. Academic credit for the program is available. Students are expected to work full-time in the research laboratory for the duration of the program.
