The University of Iowa Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research (SUMR) Program offers an intensive experience for undergraduates interested in combined MD/PhD training for a career as a physician-scientist. The program provides students with rigorous experience in research laboratories and exposure to clinical medicine and medically-relevant research. The 8-10 week SUMR Program features research conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in the biomedical sciences, shadowing of physician-scientists in a clinical setting, Emergency Room shadowing, weekly seminars presenting patient-based discussions emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, career development seminars, and clinical case-based learning sessions. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who anticipate graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences in the academic year following the summer of planned participation.
