JYI is currently seeking motivated science undergraduates to fill a variety of unpaid positions. Applicants must have a strong academic background and be proficient in the English language. All applicants for editorial positions must also demonstrate both research and writing experience. Please review what each position entails (below) before you submit an application to its respective department. Executive Board

Editor-in-Chief

The EIC is responsible for leading the development of a “journal vision,” ensuring that actions taken are in the best interest of that journal vision, and otherwise acting as the “glue” for the journal board. Within the executive board as a whole, the EIC is responsible for overseeing any operations affecting the journal.

Chief Executive Officer 

The CEO is responsible for the maintenance and establishment of inter-institutional and inter-organizational relationships, especially those formed with professional journals, corporations, publishing groups, and professional societies. The CEO develops and maintains liaisons with professionals in academia, publishing, business, industry, and the public at large.

Chief Development Officer

The Chief Development Officer must be creative, comfortable with writing, and willing to make unsolicited contact with companies and organizations. Leadership and organizational skills are essential, as the CDO coordinates a staff of development/financial officers in achieving the goals of JYI. The CDO is also responsible for the Annual Report and maintaining relationships with current sponsors.

Chief Technology Officer 

The Chief Technology Officer acts as the webmaster and is responsible for maintaining and updating JYI website. This responsibility includes the development, maintenance, and/ or security of the website on WordPress, the Hostgator web servers, the Open Journal Systems (OJS) and other database files.  The CTO may also be responsible for JYI email aliases, journal outreach using SEO, Google Analytics, and other internet marketing tools and the formatting of the journal contents for publication. 

Senior Research Editor

The SRE is responsible for all content in the research section of the journal. The SRE trains and coordinates the efforts of Research Editors and oversees their work. The SRE has final say on all publishable research manuscripts. In addition, the SRE maintains JYI’s relationship with professional faculty advisors.

Senior News & Features Editor

The SNFE is responsible for all content in the News & Features section of the journal. The SNFE trains and coordinates the efforts of News & Features Editors and oversees their work. The SNFE has final say on all publishable feature articles. In addition, the SNFE maintains JYI’s relationships with professional Science Writing Mentors and recruits and maintains science communication professionals who volunteer as professional reviewers for feature articles.

Director of Public Relations (Apply Now)

The DPR is in charge of public relations (PR) and the recruitment of manuscripts through professional avenues. The DPR develops and updates marketing materials such as PR manuals, posters, brochures, advertisements, and a PR newsletter. In addition, the DPR writes and distributes press releases, works with the media (including student newspapers) to promote JYI, and is in charge of advertisements.

Chief Operating Officer

The Chief Operating Officer is in charge of fostering a supportive environment for JYI staff members and serves as a bridge between leadership and staff. Responsibilities include managing internal programs, coordinating staff applications, working with universities worldwide, and monitoring recruitment drives. The COO ultimately ensures that all staff understand and fulfill our organization’s primary mission of enriching undergraduate science education and journalism.

Director of the Science Career Center (Apply Now)

The DCC is responsible for all content published under the Science Career Center. The DCC trains and coordinates the efforts of Career Researchers and oversees their work. The DCC has final say on all publishable SCC articles. In addition, the DCC maintains JYI’s relationship with professional reviewers and recruits and maintains science communication professionals who volunteer as professional reviewers for SCC articles. The DCC is also responsible for the continuation of the SCC article review process.

Managing Editor 

The ME coordinates various aspects of the journal, including copy-editing, and serves as the executive board secretary. As the secretary of the executive board, the ME serves as the chairperson of all official executive board meetings, archives the minutes of all meetings, and tallies all votes for every official vote. The ME also coordinates executive board meetings and other executive board events, handles all applicants for executive board positions, writes the staff monthly newsletter, and keeps an updated executive board alumni contact list. Finally, the ME is in charge of making sure that all outside queries relating to JYI are answered.

Corporate Strategy & Marketing Department 

Development Officer (Apply Now)

The Development Officer is responsible for working with the Chief Development Officer to seek out funding from and maintain relationships with sponsors. This may include researching new avenues of funding, contacting new companies or organizations, maintaining relationships with current sponsors, or monitoring and tracking current expenditures.

News and Features Department 

News and Features Editor (Apply Now)

News & Features Editors are responsible for training, managing, and maintaining communications with a small group of Science Journalists. A News and Features Editor provides advice and guidance to the Science Journalists as they write their articles and coordinates the article review process.

Science Journalist (Apply Now)

Science Journalists work under the guidance of Feature Editors to write and review feature and news articles for publication.

Research Department 

Copy Editor

The Copy Editor position, like most JYI staff positions, requires an average commitment of at least 5 hours per week. All communication is via internet or phone, so no geographical constraints exist – Copy Editors may live anywhere in the world.

Associate Editor

Associate Editors (AEs) perform the crucial function of evaluating research and review manuscripts submitted to JYI in the field of Biology. Editors are assigned a varying number of manuscripts based on how many are submitted each month.  Editors should be able to review manuscripts covering most fields within their field.

Biology and Biomedical Sciences (BIO)

Research Editors

Research Editors (REs) are responsible for providing AE feedback to the others as well as all AEs in their department.  The RE works closely with the author/advisor as well as AEs to ensure reviews and corrections are submitted in a timely manner.  In additional to the review responsibilities of this position, the RE is also responsible for their assigned AEs, including ensuring monthly reports are submitted on time, meetings are held on a regular basis, assisting with final two weeks of training, and maintain an accurate log of AEs assignments.

Science and Career Center 

Science and Career Journalist (Apply Now)

The Science Career Center is looking for Career Researchers to report on science careers in all fields, including academia, industry, government, science communication and teaching. This is an exciting position which requires the researcher to network with professionals in all fields, interview people nationally and internationally, gather statistics and career facts to write informative articles for college students all over the country.

 

Public Relations Department 

Associate Director of Social Media (Apply Now)

The Associate Director of Social Media (ADSM) will oversee JYI’s web presence on Facebook, AAAS, and other sites, collaborating with the Director of Public Relations and Managing Editor to post abstracts and updates on a biweekly basis.

PR Officer (Apply Now)

The PR Officer works closely with the Director of Public Relations to coordinate public relations and manuscript submissions for JYI. PR Officers will generally work in the following areas: advertising, visual materials development, and creating or maintaining outreach programs.

 

Human Resources Department 

Human Resources Manager  (Apply Now)

The Human Resources Manager works closely with the Director of Human Resources to accomplish the goals of the Human Resources Department. The HR Manager will work not only with the DHR but also the PR Department to make promotional materials and contact faculty, university programs and student groups to recruit both staff and submissions, while maintaining a database of existing contacts.

 

Art Department

Graphic Artist  (Inquire)

Graphic Artists will be responsible for enhancing the visual feel of the website, including creating new interfaces and adding illustrations to feature articles. These individuals will also be responsible for gathering and creating multimedia for new JYI projects such as the JYI Focus series.

 

Technology Department

Programmer (Apply Now) 

Programmers will work with the Chief Technology Officer to develop new sections of the JYI website such as the Science Career Center. Programmers will play a key role in bringing flexibility to the JYI website by creating modules and other elements to improve user experience.

Each month, more than 60,000 unique visitors visit the JYI website, and they view more than 400,000 pages.
