Editor: Chemistry
Editors perform the crucial function of evaluating research and review manuscripts submitted to JYI in the field of Chemistry. Editors are assigned a varying number of manuscripts to review based upon their own schedules and work pace. The Editors read through and analyze the manuscripts, filling in various review forms, and then are required to meet with his/her Faculty Advisor to discuss the paper. Based on their evaluations, Editors recommend whether or not the manuscript should be accepted for publication. Besides reviewing manuscripts, Editors may also participate in other functions, such as submissions and staff recruitment, and editorial writing among others.
Job Requirements: The Editor position requires an average commitment of at 5 hours per week. All communication is via internet or phone, so no geographical constraints exist – Editors may live anywhere in the world. However, all JYI staff are required to check their email daily and respond promptly. Also, Editors must attend mandatory staff meetings that provide insight into the administrative aspects of JYI. Finally, as the Faculty Advisor is in essence a mentor to the Editor, it is imperative that all Editors communicate with their Faculty Advisors often in order to ensure that the manuscripts reviewed are scientifically accurate and conform to all conventional science writing guidelines.
Preferred Skills or Experience: Research experience is recommended, but not necessary. Editors in Chemistry must be comfortable evaluating the methods, results, and interpretations in a manuscript in all fields of chemistry. Previous experience working on a publication or in a deadline-driven environment is beneficial. Previous writing or editorial experience is also preferred, but not required.
