News and Features Editor
News and Features Editors are responsible for training, managing, and maintaining communications with a small group of Science Journalists. A News and Features Editor provides advice and guidance to the Science Journalists as they write their articles and coordinates the article review process. This includes assigning weekly news stories, assigning stories for review and editing completed articles.
Job Requirements: The News and Features Editor position, like most JYI staff positions, requires an average commitment of at least 5 hours per week. All communication is via internet or phone, so no geographical constraints exist – News and Features Editors may live anywhere in the world. All JYI staff are expected to check their email daily and respond promptly if necessary.
Preferred Skills or Experience: News and Features Editors must have previous experience writing news articles and/or feature articles for general interest publications. Good organization and time management skills are also required. News and Features Editors must accommodate many emails, requests, and articles in various states of review all at once. Deadlines must be met to ensure that the publishing process is not slowed. As a News and Features Editor, good motivational skills are beneficial for not only training new Science Journalists, but also for leading a team through good example. Finally, a sense of professionalism is expected.
Applicants should have previous leadership and editing experience.
