Editor in ChiefBiochemistry and Molecular Biology Ph.DAlexander Nikolich Patananan has been at the Journal of Young Investigators since June of 2006. He has held the positions of Associated Editor, Research Editor, and now Senior Research Editor. Alexander was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Palmdale. After graduating from Antelope Valley College Summa Cum Laude at the age of 18 with an Associates of Science degree in Biological Sciences, Alexander attended the University of California at Los Angeles, majoring in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. During his undergraduate career, he has held one U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) CCI fellowship and two DOE SULI internships at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the summers of 2005, 2006, and 2007. His research projects have focused on Arabidopsis thaliana and soybean cyst nematode proteomics, in addition to analyzing the surface-mediated unfolding kinetics of globular proteins on cationic surfaces. He has also been involved in the UCLA Undergraduate Research Consortium in Functional Genomics, conducting research associated with the genome-wide clonal analysis of lethal mutations in Drosophila melanogaster, as well as the development of a novel in vivo cell-lineage tracing system. Alexander is the author of six research publications, five JYI editorials, two books, and numerous posters. After graduating College Honors from UCLA, Alexander is now pursuing his Ph.D in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. When not studying and doing research, Alexander enjoys running, mountaineering, and reading the Bible.
