01 April 2009 -
Each month, the
Staff Member of the Month award is given to outstanding staff members who has shown a strong commitment to JYI and to the promotion of undergraduate scientific publication. This April, the award goes to
Jess Kloss, a Feature and News Editor, and to
Akshay Sharma, Associate Editor in the Biological Biomedical Sciences Division.
Jess Kloss is a senior astrophysics major at Princeton University with a minor in French. Currently she is working on her thesis on galaxy alignment and enjoying her last year as a pole-vaulter on the Princeton Track & Field Team.
She has thoroughly enjoyed her time with JYI, where she came in as a complete novice to science journalism and worked her way to being Feature and News Editor. Because of her passion for making the most obscure branches of science accessible to a general audience, next year she hopes to continue doing science journalism.

He is currently an Intern and will be graduating in March 2010. He joined JYI in November 2008 and has recently finished his training to be an Associate Editor in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Division.
His interests vary from microbiology to genetics to parapsychology and he has acquainted himself with all these fields by taking up short-term research projects in the various departments. He wishes to be an oncologist and is currently engaged in a systematic review regarding the efficacy of stem cell transplantation in various hematological malignancies. He likes writing and has written a short piece on his experiences as an undergraduate researcher in the JYI.
He is involved in the Organizing Committee of the Medicon 2009 which is an Asian Medical Students Research Conference to be organized in Mangalore, India in June 2009. He is also the President of the Indian Forum for Medical Students' Research (INFORMER) and is closely associated with the Indian Medical Students Association (IMSA).
