03 June 2008 -
Each month, the
Staff Member of the Month award is given to two outstanding staff members who have shown a strong commitment to JYI and to the promotion of undergraduate scientific publication. This June, the awards go to
Nafisa Jadavji, JYI’s Senior Research Editor, and to
Priscilla Chui, a Career Researcher.
Nafisa Jadavji has served JYI for five years: in 2003, she was hired as an Associate Editor and she became a Biology Research Editor in 2005. One year later, in June 2006, Nafisa became JYI’s Senior Research Editor on the Executive Board and has remained in this position since then. This June, Nafisa will resign from her position and the entire JYI staff would like to thank her for her incredible dedication.
Nafisa just recently successfully defended her M.Sc. thesis titled, ‘Interactions of Motor System Function’ at the Canadian Center for Behavioural Neuroscience which is located at University of Lethbridge in Canada. In September 2008, Nafisa will begin her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in Montreal, Canada.
Nafisa’s research interests include investigating the role of stress on motor function and experiential therapies for Parkinson’s disease. Nafisa primarily works with rodent models of stress and Parkinson’s disease. She uses a wide variety of behavioural tests to determine the effects of stress and experiential therapies on skilled motor function, such as the skilled reaching and walking tasks. In addition to behavioural tests, Nafisa also uses histological and neurochemical techniques to analyze and asses changes within the brain.
Nafisa has been with JYI since 2003. She has served as an Associate Editor for 2 years, a Research Editor for 1 year and finally as the Senior Research Editor for 2 years. Some of the accomplishments during her time with JYI include attending the AAAS conferences to promote JYI as well as increasing the number of monthly research and literature reviews published in JYI. She has worked with some great staff and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work. Nafisa would also like to thank her adviser, Dr. Jennifer Mather.
Priscilla Chui is a third year undergraduate at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying Civil Engineering with emphases on Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. Ms. Chui attended high school at Glen A. Wilson High as an accomplished student, president and drum captain of the school's marching band, a competitive athlete on the girls' tennis team, a member of yearbook, Mock Trial, and the Freshmen Outreach Program. She then attended the University of California, Santa Cruz and soon transferred to UCLA in Spring 2007.
Ms. Chui is completing her first civil engineering internship with the City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Engineering, where she acted as a liaison between professional engineers, architects, contractors, developers, and property owners. At UCLA, she is a member of Chi Epsilon (Honor Society of Civil Engineers) and ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers). For her research career, Ms. Chui has been the undergraduate research assistant for UCLA's Statistical Online Computational Resource under the guidance of Professor Ivo Dinov. She has been invited to present her manuscript based on her research at an international conference held in Hawaii. As a continuation of research, she will spend her 2008 summer overseas in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as an undergraduate geotechnical research assistant.
Priscilla Chui joined JYI in March 2008 as a Career Researcher. She would like to thank her friends and family for their care, influences, and support, and looks forward to continuing her work at JYI.
Though Nafisa and Priscilla are at very different places in their experience with JYI, both have been critical in the maintenance and promotion of the Journal. JYI is extremely grateful for the work they have done and excited to see what they will produce in the future!
